For the dough:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg

For the filling:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon

For the topping:

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Pearl sugar or granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk to about 110°F (45°C) and dissolve the yeast in it. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sugar, flour, salt, and cardamom. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Mix the sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the butter.
  5. Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 12 equal pieces. Place the pieces in a greased baking pan.
  6. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the buns with the beaten egg and sprinkle with pearl sugar.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
