Croque Monsieur is a classic French ham and cheese sandwich topped with creamy béchamel sauce and melted Gruyère cheese. This indulgent treat is perfect for a quick and satisfying lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 200 ml milk
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 100 g Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 4 slices ham
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens. Stir in Dijon mustard and half of the grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Spread the béchamel sauce over two slices of bread. Top with ham and the remaining slices of bread.
  5. Spread more béchamel sauce on top of the sandwiches and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
  6. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
